The WAssociate registry key is in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and defines a simple registry entry for a file type to show up as a double-click action (WAssociate.exe) for any extension.
WAssociate.exe is available for download as a small executable of only 1.1Kb which will register a file type. WAssociate.exe is written in VBscript. A VBscript editor is required to open the script, as the script is open to code injection attacks. Therefore, as the WAssociate.exe is downloaded it will prompt the user to download the free Snipping Tool.
WAssociate.exe uses a registry value of “WAssociate” to register the file type, and the standard file extension of “.htm” as the WAssociate.exe for double clicking. The default icon used for the WAssociate.exe icon is an icon from the “Icons” folder for “DHTML Editing Scripts”.
WAssociate.exe has several options to make associations. WAssociate.exe by default does not have an associated command (as it is just a simple registration, it must not modify the current action in the registry), but other options to make associations with the file type. For example, the WAssociate.exe file will have a command if it has an associated command.
The WAssociate.exe will use the standard Windows file associations to make associations for “explorer view”, “text edit”, “word processor”, “viewer”, and “editor”. If the file type is registered with an associated command, WAssociate.exe will modify the current action to use that associated command when a file with that extension is selected, instead of the default association with the file type.
The WAssociate.exe file is not dependent on any other Windows files.
How to Install:
Download and extract the “WAssociate.exe” file to the desktop.
If a command is associated with the file type, this will be prompted to the user. This will make WAssociate.exe’s program open with the associated program. If no command is associated with the file type, the WAssociate.exe will simply register the file type to make it show up as a double click action in Windows Explorer.
